11:35 p.m. - 2008-09-05 "Remember when the Real World/Road Rules Challenges were interesting to watch? When tasks such as Monster truck racing, Tight Rope Walking, Bungee jumping and Mud wrestling were involved? Those day are no more, and in recent challenges, there haven't been much to look forward to but ice melting and racing up stairs. And although the recent challenge, the Gauntlet III, was promised to re-touch on the Challenges' roots, it has proven to be a dissappointment, as it merely mimics the last few challenges. For one, unlike the old Challenges, where there were different cast members on each challenge, the same castmembers have been in the last five challenges in a row. This makes for boring and repetitive storylines and conflicts. The Gauntlet III is no different, as castmembers Beth, Coral, CT, Katie and Kenny are in tow. Each of those cast members have atleast four challenges under their belts. The outline of this challenge is as well typical of recent challenges. Like the other challenges, it hasn't followed the original plan of having Road Rules members go against Real World members. Instead, it features Veterans (people who have been in more than one challenge) against Rookies (people who have been in only one or no challenges), which raises the question, what is the point of having it be a "Real World versus Road Rules" challenge, when a Real World castmember and a Road Rules castmember can be on the same team? Also, like the last few challenges, it features castmembers of each team sending two other castmembers to some sort of obstacle, in this case, a "gauntlet." The "obstacles" of this gauntlet mirrors those of the last few challenges as well, with weight-baring and sand-racing challenges. Just by watching the premiere of Gauntlet III , one can predict the outcomes of the show. In a nut-shell, it included hookups, pointless arguing, pool-side chats and one of the castmembers confronting resident Real World/Road Rules drama queen Beth. So typical. And to make matters worse, the very first challenge of this season, which involved the castmembers in a mud pool chasing after different colored balls, exactly mirrors a challenge from the original Gauntlet. And the second episode was so dry and predictable, that I forgot what is was even about. I was expecting better from this challenge, but its proving to be just another Inferno II and III, Battle of the Sexes II, Fresh Meat and Gauntlet II. Outcomes, story-lines and fights are all very predictable and the tasks are still not as exciting and nail-biting as they used to be. The Gauntlet III airs Wed. nights at 10:00 p.m. on MTV."
